With the buzz surrounding 4K / UHD we could all use an occasional reminder that there is more to video than pixel count. Case in point: the exciting field of High-Dynamic-Range Imaging. Commonly called HDR (or HDRI) it is a technology that first appeared (pardon the pun) in still photography. HDR however is rapidly making its way into the world of video.

The theory behind HDR is simple. While the human eye is well adapted to deal with the wide variety of lighting colors and intensities presented to us by the natural world, traditional imaging technologies are not. The result of this shortcoming being that, especially in scenes with high levels of contrast, large portions of the video are either over or under-exposed. Utilizing advanced technologies HDR video aims to solve this problem, rendering images much more closely aligned with the way the human eye perceives light.

HDR is an impressive technology representing an arguably more significant improvement to picture quality than the extra pixels of 4K / UHD. Like any new technology however, HDR has a number of hurdles to clear before it goes mainstream. From the formulation of common standards to the development of complete content pipelines, the challenges are numerous.

In this episode we discuss this and more with Alan Chalmers. Alan is the Innovation Director at goHDR, a company at the forefront of HDR development around the world. Our conversation with Alan covers everything from his personal background to goHDR’s role in shaping the future of HDR video. As always we hope you enjoy!
